Description

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is looking for an inspired and enthusiastic Curator of Photography and Student Artto join our team!

This key role will lead two vibrant exhibition programs at SFO Museum, the AAM-accredited Museum located throughout the terminals of San Francisco International Airport.

Under the guidance of our Curator in Charge of Exhibitions, you will:

  • Curate and organize Photography and Student Art exhibitions
  • Collaborate with artists, educators, lenders, institutions, and community organizations
  • Take an active role in the conceptualization, development, and execution of special exhibition projects at SFO Museum
  • Help engage a global audience of 52+ million travelers annually

The essential functions of this position include:

  1. Produce an advance exhibition schedule for Photography and Student Art.
  2. Program a broad range of subjects for the Photography and Student Art exhibitions throughout the Airport.
  3. Curate and write text for Photography and Student Art exhibitions for presentation in SFO Museum galleries; secure selections from exhibition partners with sufficient time for Registration department to conduct loan process.
  4. Collaborate with the Museum’s Graphic Design team to meet established deadlines for Photography exhibitions; provide selected image files, corresponding text, and selections for graphic treatment to graphic designer with sufficient time for production.
  5. Curate and write exhibition text for Student Art exhibitions: secure and deliver necessary artwork or files with sufficient time for scheduled gallery installations and online presentation.
  6. Promote SFO Museum exhibitions and increase awareness of the program’s offerings; select 3-4 exhibitions annually for press release and announcements.
  7. Work collaboratively with SFOM colleagues to achieve the mission and goals established in the Museum’s Strategic Plan within the established budget and time restrictions.
  8. Take an active role in the conceptualization, development, and execution of special projects, particularly those involving photography. Responsibilities include identifying relevant themes, securing materials, and coordinating with external partners and internal teams to produce exhibitions and graphic treatments that extend beyond the Museum's standard programming.
  9. Actively work to expand community engagement by building relationships with local organizations, fostering partnerships, and developing programs that encourage participation in the Museum’s exhibitions and initiatives.
  10. Lead tours of exhibitions for internal and external partners. When called upon, deliver presentations to a variety of audiences, including community groups, professional organizations, and the travelling public.
  11. Organize and participate in events, such as artist talks, public programs, and Employee Resource Group activities, to highlight exhibitions and special projects. Act as a Museum representative to promote SFO Museum’s mission and build public interest.
  12. Develop and implement programming that complements exhibitions, enhances visitor understanding, and strengthens community connections.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

How to qualify

  1. Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in the fine arts, art history, decorative arts, design, history, library science, museum studies, natural history, science, technology, or other closely related disciplines. AND
  2. Experience: Five (5) years of museum experience.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Five (5) years of experience in museum exhibit curation and ability to independently curate exhibitions.
  2. Familiarity with the Mac platform, Microsoft Office. Working knowledge of Epson systems and large-format inkjet printing processes a plus.
  3. Ability to plan, organize, implement complex projects; ability to multitask and problem solve.
  4. Ability to work in a team-oriented, fast-moving and dynamic environment.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, assistants, supervisors, Museum and Airport staff, outside agencies, and the public.
